What to see in Toro

Situated at only 100m above the Duero valley, Toro is known not only for its amazing wines but also for its rich historic momuments that reflect a by gone golden era, a town for princes, princesses, kings and queens. If you have time to take a stroll through this charming town, do not miss.

  • The Colegiata De Santa María La Mayor church (XII Century). Built in the 12th Century this magestic church sits on top of the Toro hill and overlooks the Duero valley. Its dome, interior magestic door way and its art gallery are a must.
  • Remains of the old inner and outer walls of Toro and their gates of entry such as the Arch of Corredera or the Arch of the Postigo.
  • The clock tower built in the 18th century, it is said that it was made with wine. Forms part of the inner wall of Toro.
  • Sancti Spiritus Convent. Belonging to the Dominicas, this impressive convent houses the Museum of Religious Art of Toro which boasts an impressive collection.
  • Moorish styled churches amongst the most well preserved in Spain. San Salvador de Los Caballeros, San Lorenzo El Real, and Santa María de la Vega are three to mention. Also of interest are the remains of San Pedro del Olmo church.
  • The bull ring. Love or hate bull fighting, this bull ring is a must see purely for its beauty. Built in the 1828 in wood, it's the 3rd oldest bull ring of its kind in Spain. It has been recently restored and is now used for bull events as well as other cultural activities such as the Toro Wine Festival held in May.
  • The "Alcázar of Toro" or the Castle of Toro, once residence of the Catholic King and Queen, Isabel and Fernando, its structure formed part of Toro's fortress. Later used as prison. Built in the 10th Century.
