Gran Colegiata Original

Region: Reserva

Grape variety: 100% Tinta de Toro

Ungrafted vineyards of over 60 years' age. Harvesting by hand. De-steeming, followed by alcoholic fermentation carried out at 24 to 28ºC over a period of 12 to 15 days.

18 months in American oak barrels and at least 3 years in bottle.

Tasting notes:

A brick-red colour. The nose reveals aromas of liquorice, very ripe black fruits as well as plums, mingling with touches of vanilla, cocoa and leather. Silky on the palate with medium structure. Complex and well-balanced.

Manuel Fariña's message:

Why "Original" and what does it represent? “Colegiata” was the brand we used to market our first wines made with Tinta de Toro, back in the 70s. It was the “origin”, a starting point, a new approach to how we thought Toro wine should be in a late 20th century.

And it was a Gran Colegiata Reserva the first wine from the winery that in the 1980s had great international recognition and the one that opened the doors to foreign markets.  But it also managed to get both the specialized press and the national market to began to take into account the wines of the region, and to change the concept that they had of them. This was a turning point for our winery and for the development of the DO Toro.

After almost half a century producing this wine, we intend to highlight its importance, evoking the image of the first Gran Colegiata, which was bottled in a Burgundy bottle - which in its day represented the highest quality standard - and which bore the great historical monument of Toro, the Colegiata, on its label. The same that we wanted to transmit with a structured and elegant wine, but at the same time friendly. A wine that wants to respond to the taste of a current consumer, without losing sight of where it is and where it comes from.
